WORLD MARCH OF WOMEN
Marching for equality, justice and a participatory democracy that hears women's voices. On October 15, 2000, women from across this nation will march on Washington D.C. in solidarity with the marches of women in 157 countries. The five continents will resonate with their courage and determination. Since the Quebec feminists launched the appeal for women's solidarity worldwide, the World March of Women has ignited hope around the world, encompassing over 5,000 organizations today. Why do we need this historic March of women in America in this so-called time of "unprecedented prosperity." The answer lies in the fact that concentration of wealth and power is creating a de-volution of our civilization with women and minorities being pushed further and further down the economic ladder. The gap between rich and poor has never been greater in America. One percent of American citizens now control in excess of 40% of the wealth of our nation. Seven percent of Americans control 66% of all financial assets. The incidence of sweatshops in some of America's largest cities is back to the level of the early 1900s. Our courts have upheld the denial of American workers' access to the courts as a condition of getting a paycheck. Corporations now finance and, de facto own, what was once the people's elected officials. Women have historically been initiators, organizers and activists for alternatives to inequality, poverty, violence, human rights and civil rights. But as the wealth gap widens, the traditional channels of financial support diminish along with women's voices -- placing more power in the hands of the oppressors. The objective of this planet-wide March is to lay the foundation for an international women's network where dedicated, creative women will unite to challenge this New World Disorder. Come. March with us in the spirit of Margaret Mead's prophetic message: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has." Our planet, our Country, our collective hopes and dreams for the future have never needed you more. Sunday, October 15, 2000, Washington, D.C.
